At the initial appointment James will carefully listen to any concerns you may have about your teeth and mouth, and find out from you what your hopes and aims for dental treatment are. He will examine your jaw joints, the soft tissue of your mouth, gums and teeth. Appropriate photographs, radiographs (x-rays) and other diagnostic tests will be taken for further information. James will then explain the findings of his examination and tests with you, and give you all the options and possible costs for the treatment that you may need. When the proposed treatment is straightforward, you will be invited to book any appointments that you may need – or, if you prefer, you can have as much time as you need to think about how you’d like to proceed before booking any appointments. If the treatment you require is more complex, you may be asked to return for further discussion. Before commencing any dental work, a plan of treatment with associated fees will be agreed with you. We will never start any treatment until you completely understand what is to be done and what it's going to cost.

Following your examination with James, or our specialist periodontist Federico Moreno, you will be recommended to visit our hygienist, Lisa Tomlinson.
A small percentage of the population is susceptible to periodontal or gum disease. Without regular care and advice, people may notice red, swollen and bleeding gums and gum recession. Drifting and loose teeth will also progress due to loss of the supporting bone. These patients are in need of more advanced care and are referred to our specialist periodontist, Dr Federico Moreno. Unless the disease is very progressed, Federico can treat the problem and extend the life of your own teeth. You can find out more about Federico on the Team pages. He treats not only our own patients in York but also accepts referrals from any general dental practice. Federico and Lisa work very closely together to diagnose, treat and manage a wide range of gum diseases.
We work closely with one of the country’s top denture laboratories, which is vital to ensure the control and predictability of your dentures. Quality is paramount so you can expect a high standard of workmanship using only the very best materials which will produce an exceptional result. Whatever type of denture we make, you can be assured they will look and feel almost indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Many people experience problems with dentures including looseness, discomfort and an inability to eat properly. We achieve the best results in terms of comfort, function and appearance by making the dentures over a series of appointments.
Full dentures replace all missing teeth and are constructed in high impact gum coloured acrylic resin and superior acrylic teeth. We work closely with you and often use photographs of your original appearance to recreate the teeth you’ve always wanted. Often dentures are under built resulting in a hollow, aged facial appearance. However, at James Pegg Dentistry we eliminate technical errors by providing correctly contoured dentures to enhance your facial appearance. You will always see how the dentures look and feel in your mouth prior to the dentures being processed.
At James Pegg Dentistry we provide conventional acrylic or cobalt-chromium partial dentures. These dentures are removable and are attached to the natural teeth using clasps. Alternatively we may use more specialised precision attachments to retain the denture more discreetly.
For certain patients with the right quality and quantity of bone, titanium implants may be placed in the upper or lower jaw bones.
Attachments placed on these implants rigidly retain a full upper or lower denture which some find more suited to their lifestyle. At our practice the implants are placed by Federico Moreno and James Pegg completes the restoration. We have found this team approach provides predicable, optimum results.
James has been providing straightening treatments for front teeth since 2009 using the Inman Aligner® and Smilelign®.
These treatments can dramatically improve the appearance of your smile without the need for more complex or invasive methods. James has extensive experience in providing aesthetic and cosmetic dental treatment. He has undertaken considerable amounts of postgraduate study in aesthetics and occlusion (the study of how the jaws work and how teeth bite) and is a Full Member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
When doing tooth-coloured fillings, James takes great care to accurately reproduce the natural colours, contours and anatomical features of the tooth to produce an incredibly lifelike result. Tooth-coloured filling material can also be used to deliberately change the shape of a tooth to give a much more desirable appearance.
Before James embarks on a course of cosmetic dental treatment he and his team work closely with his patient and the dental ceramists to plan the treatment very carefully. He can provide 'provisional' treatment, which is non-invasive and completely reversible, to show his patients in their own mouths what the proposed outcome of the treatment might be. The proposed dental treatment can then be modified if needed before anything permanent is done. That way the patient, the ceramist and James and his team can all be confident that the proposed treatment will be successful. It is this attention to detail which gives very successful outcomes and very happy patients.

The end of an era at James Pegg Dentistry this week, as we bade a sad farewell to our friend and colleague specialist periodontist Federico Moreno. Federico is moving abroad, and we wish him every success and a very happy future. All of us, and your patients too, will miss you Fede! We are excited to announce that Dr Maria Balta will soon be joining the team as specialist periodontist to take over from Federico, and we will give more information about Maria soon.
